Engagement

Friday January 14:

Maik wakes up to call my Dad in the US.  After some small talk about Auburn Football, work, and the weather, Maik talks about how he has had a great year and a half with me and doesn’t want to go forward without me (haha) and asks Dad, “Can I marry your daughter?” Dad’s reply: “You’ll have to ask her”  (I’m sure they said some other nice things about me though…)

Previously that week, Maik had gone to a local jeweler with our boss/friend/pastor Tobin Miller.  He knew that the “goods” would be ready by Friday, and being the kind girlfriend that I was, I graciously cleared my schedule for Friday night.

So Maik discreetly handed the taxi driver the address to the Jumbo floating restaurant and we were on our way. It’s fun because you take a little ferry to get to the restaurant and we had been there with my parents when they visited Hong Kong last time!

Finally we were at the Top Deck Restaurant (top of the Jumbo floating restaurant in Aberdeen), to celebrate our “late Christmas” (Yes, we were quite busy this Christmas, and yes, I had a hard time calling it Christmas because it was more than 3 weeks past).  After we had our lovely appetizer of Greek food and main dish of Thai curry and steak (yes we shared.. we like variety) Maik asked if I wanted my present.  I had joked earlier that it was our 16 2/3 month anniversary, which is what it said on the envelope of a nice CHRISTMAS card I received. While I opened my box of chocolates (which also doubled as a board game of Clue, so fun) and belated Christmas card with this pendant made from my Grandmother’s ring, Maik pulled the ring out of his pocket and held it under the table until I looked over.  Down on one knee, he held this lovely gem out and asked me to be his wife!  Of course I said I would love to and simply couldn’t believe the moment that I had dreamed about was finally happening! After some dessert we took the ferry back and went back to Maik’s to Skype with our families. What a blessing technology is!

We are so thankful to be in this season and look forward to what God has in store for the next season as husband and wife!
